Dear Students and Families,
In March, the BC Ministry of Education announced a new Indigenous Graduation Requirement that will come into effect for the 2023-2024 school year. This requirement is part of the province’s Indigenous-specific anti-racism and discrimination strategy for the K-12 school system. It is guided by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and is an important commitment to Truth and Reconciliation in our community.
RE Mountain students will have several four credit opportunities to engage in learning to meet the new graduation requirements. These choices include:
- First Peoples English Literary Studies + Writing 10 (four credits)
- First Peoples English Literary Studies + New Media 10 (four credits)
- First Peoples Literary Studies + Writing 11 (four credits)
- First Peoples English 12 (four credits)
- BC First Peoples 12 (Social Studies) (four credits)
Taking any of these classes does not require a student to give up an elective. Instead of taking one of our English 11 strands, a student could take First Peoples Literary Studies/Writing 11, for example. First Peoples English 12 is recognized as an equivalent to English 12 by Canadian post-secondary institutions and is the equivalent in breadth, depth, and rigor to English 12. BC First Peoples 12 meets the current Grade 11/12 Social Studies graduation requirement. The Grade 11 and 12 courses listed above are already running with great success at RE Mountain, so students can be confident in their choice for meeting the graduation requirement for 2024. All classes are well-supported with curriculum and resources. To learn more about BCFP12 from REMSS students, or to explore the benefits of EFP courses, scan these videos:
Currently, the Ministry of Education is seeking feedback on this new graduation requirement. To learn more or provide feedback, please visit the Indigenous-Focused Graduation Requirement site. The opportunity to provide feedback is available until April 22, 2022.
Using the form below, please indicate which course you’d like to choose this coming school year by Sunday, April 24. There is an option to defer this graduation requirement until the 2023-2024 year if it better suits your course plans. Students enrolled in a Pre-IB or IB Program will meet this graduation requirement through pre-selected course programming. If you have any questions, please connect with your counsellor.
