English Language Learners

Thinking in English

ELL students need to develop English language fluency as well as Canadian culture knowledge fluency.  They need English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as an understanding of Canadian customs, traditions, and judicial as well as democratic systems.  The ELL Department’s aim is to nurture students’ English language fluency and Canadian cultural fluency by doing the following activities in all the ELL classes:

Level I to IV – ELL classes: Class activities will include discussions, presentations, debate, reading newspaper articles and writer’s response journals on current Canadian events

Level III & IV – ELL classes: Class activities will include a unit on Canadian political, judicial, and democratic systems

Level III classes: Class activities will include a unit on Canadian manners

Level I and II classes: Class activities will include a unit on Canadian traditional holidays

A student focus group will be interviewed to collect data to measure students’ progress in cultural fluency. Teachers will also organize an annual ELL testing to collect data to measure students’ progress in English language fluency.
